Motorcycle racer Ángel Nieto, posthumously awarded an honorary doctorate by the UMH

The Miguel Hernández University has posthumously awarded an honorary doctorate to the Spanish motorcycle racer Ángel Nieto, on the occasion of the closing of the UMH’s 20th anniversary celebrations. The athlete’s eldest son, Ángel Nieto “Gelete,” accepted the honor on his father’s behalf. The new doctor’s sponsors were Professor Francisco Javier Amorós Cortés of the UMH’s Department of Statistics and Operations Research and Professor Ramón Peral Orts of the University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Ángel Nieto made his debut at the age of 17 in the Spanish Motorcycle Grand Prix, held in Barcelona, ​​where he finished fifth. He won his first world title in 1969, during the East German Grand Prix. He went on to win 12 more titles until 1984. After retiring from racing, he focused his career on sports commentary for television and technical director for the Aprilia brand.

Among those attending this event were the Mayor of Elche, Carlos González, the Mayor of San Juan d’Alacant, Jaime Joaquín Albero, and the motorcycle racers Nico Terol and Jorge Martínez “Aspar”.
