Brachychiton derives from the Greek: brachys = short and chiton = tunic or covering (possibly alluding to the persistent outer covering of the seeds). Rupestris comes from Latin, indicating that it grows among rocks. It is called the “bottle tree” because of its peculiar trunk, which thickens to resemble a bottle, a feature that is not fully apparent until after 15 years.

ORNAMENTAL: A tree of great beauty and hardiness.
