Feast of Saint Thomas Aquinas 2017 and investiture of Mrs. Teresa Perales as Doctor Honoris Causa
On January 27, 2017, the Miguel Hernández University (UMH) of Elche held the solemn Academic Ceremony of Saint Thomas Aquinas. The Rector of the UMH, Jesús T. Pastor Ciurana, awarded Olympic medalist Teresa Perales Fernández an Honorary Doctorate. The sponsor of the new Honorary Doctorate was Raúl Reina, professor and director of the Department of Support for Students with Disabilities at the UMH.
The ceremony also included the awarding of the new Doctorates and the presentation of the Extraordinary Doctorate Awards.
The ceremony was presided over by the Rector of the UMH, Jesús T. Pastor Ciurana; the President of the University’s Board of Trustees, Francisco Borja Miralles; the Director General of the Valencian Agency for Assessment and Prospective Studies, Salvador Palazón; the Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation, Manuel Jordán; and the Secretary General, Mercedes Sánchez.
Athlete Teresa Perales has won a total of 26 Paralympic medals in swimming. She has also broken five world records at world championships, two in long course and three in short course, and has won 17 medals, while she has won 29 medals at European Championships. Perales has also been a High-Level Sportsperson since 1998, enrolled in the ADOP program.
Teresa Perales holds a degree in Physiotherapy from the University of Zaragoza (1996-1999). She taught Physiotherapy in Paralympic Sport at the University of Zaragoza for two years, and taught summer courses at the University of Teruel and the Colindres Summer University (Cantabria).
