ORIGIN: Mediterranean region.
CHARACTERISTICS:
- Evergreen tree with a dense crown and thick trunk.
- Its very tough leaves serve as a strategy to prevent excessive transpiration, allowing it to live in dry, sunny locations.
INTERESTING FACTS:
- It is the most representative tree of the Iberian Peninsula.
- It establishes symbiotic relationships with various soil fungi, forming mycorrhizae. One of these fungi is responsible for the development of the prized truffle.
USES:
- INDUSTRIAL: Its very hard wood is used to create items that must withstand heavy use (carts, plows, tools, etc.). It is also valued for its firewood, which can be burned or used to make excellent charcoal.
- LIVESTOCK: Pigs fed on acorns produce some of the most prestigious hams in Spain.
- ORNAMENTAL: Planted individually or in groups in Mediterranean gardens.
