Last Friday, June 9th, the UMH 20th Anniversary Sports Gala was held in the Arenals building at Miguel Hernández University. During the ceremony, the Rector of UMH, Jesús Pastor Ciurana, presented an award to football coach Fran Escribá in honor of his sporting career. Thirteen additional awards were presented to athletes and organizations linked to the University throughout its 20-year history, including the Trinidad Alfonso Foundation and the Lucentum Foundation, journalist Santiago Gambín, Alicante tennis player Rubén Ramírez, Paralympic athlete Santiago Sanz, footballers Eloy González and Emilio Esteban, and the first people from Elche to reach the summit of Mount Everest. The UMH badminton, women’s handball, and men’s basketball teams were also recognized. Likewise, the Dátil and Guepardo projects, in which students from the Higher Polytechnic School of Elche participate, were recognized as research teams applied to sport.
