The Department of Public International Law and International Relations at the Miguel Hernández University of Elche (UMH), with funding from the General Secretariat for Defense Policy of the Ministry of Defense (Order of July 18, 2025), has organized the 13th Course on Security and Defense: Spain’s Role in the Defense of Europe. Professor Elena Crespo Navarro, Chair of Public International Law and International Relations at UMH, is the academic director of this course, which will be held on October 13 and 14 in Room 0.7 of the Altabix Building on the Elche campus.
The course, aimed at the entire university community and open to the general public, consists of two roundtables. The first roundtable, entitled “Addressing New Challenges and Threats to Security in the Current Strategic Context: Strengthening European Defense,” will be held next Monday, October 13, at 5:15 p.m., and will feature the participation of Carlos Jiménez Piernas, Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the University of Alcalá, and Javier Irazoqui González, a diplomat with the DICOES (Ministry of Defense). Professor Crespo Navarro will moderate the discussion.
The second roundtable discussion, entitled “The Participation of the Spanish Armed Forces in International Missions and Operations,” will be held on October 14 at 5:30 p.m. The speakers will be Colonel Fernando Bueno Caballero of the Air Force and Space Corps and Geopolitics Analyst at DICOES (Ministry of Defense), and Valentín Bou Franch, Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the University of Valencia. The discussion will be moderated by Jaume Ferrer Lloret, Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the University of Alicante.
The main objective of this event is to stimulate knowledge, debate, and reflection among civil society (particularly the university community) regarding the work of the Spanish Armed Forces and their importance in guaranteeing the defense of our country within an environment of international peace and security. Likewise, the Course aims to showcase the objectives, operation and activities carried out on the ground by international missions and operations and to contribute to creating a culture of defense, building bridges for the exchange of ideas between representatives of the civil and military administration and civil society in general.
A certificate of attendance will be issued to those who attend both roundtables and request it by completing the following REGISTRATION FORM.
