Official opening of the 2020/2021 academic year

The rector of the Miguel Hernández University (UMH) of Elche, Juan José Ruiz Martínez, inaugurated the 2020/2021 academic year this morning. The ceremony was attended by, among other dignitaries, the Regional Minister for Innovation, Universities, Science, and Digital Society, Carolina Pascual Villalobos.

In addition to the rector of the UMH and Regional Minister Pascual Villalobos, the ceremony was presided over by the rector of the University of Valencia, María Vicenta Mestre Escrivà; the rector of the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Francisco José Mora Más; the rector of the University of Alicante, Manuel Palomar; the rector of the Jaume I University, Eva Alcón Soler; and the rector of the University of Murcia, José Luján Alcaraz.

The event was also attended by the President of the UMH Social Council, Joaquín Pérez Vázquez; the Mayor of Elche, Carlos González; and the Mayor of Sant Joan d’Alacant, Jaime Joaquín Albero; as well as the President of the Alicante Provincial Council, Carlos Mazón; the Subdelegate of the Government in Alicante, Araceli Poblador; and the Rector of the Catholic University of Valencia, José Manuel Pagán Agulló, among other figures.

During the ceremony, the Secretary General of the University, Mercedes Sánchez Castillo, read the Annual Report for the 2019/2020 Academic Year, and then Marival Bermejo, Professor of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Technology at the UMH, gave the inaugural lecture, entitled “The Golden Pill for Covid-19.” Likewise, awards were presented to teaching and research staff (PDI) and administrative and administrative staff (PAS) who left the service during the 2019/2020 academic year due to death or contract termination. Finally, the video “A Year in Pictures” was screened.
