The Miguel Hernández University (UMH) of Elche organized the Summer Course “The World of Terrorism: The Current Perspective,” which took place between Wednesday, June 29, and Friday, July 1, in the Arenals building on the Elche campus. Around 100 people, more than half of them National Police officers, attended this Summer Course, which featured speakers from the Spanish university and specialists from the National Police Corps.

The opening ceremony, held on Wednesday, was attended by the Rector of the UMH, Jesús Pastor Ciurana; the Chief Superintendent of the National Police in the Valencian Community, José Javier Cuasante; the Director of the UMH’s Crímina Center, Professor Fernando Miró; and the President of the Provincial Court of Alicante, Vicente Magro, who delivered the opening lecture.

During the course, the causes and consequences of contemporary terrorism and the current state of the phenomenon were analyzed, including its characteristics and processes, especially regarding the use of new virtual environments for radicalization, recruitment, and propaganda. Specifically, topics covered included the latest criminal and procedural reforms against terrorism offenses, financing, jihadist radicalism, cyberterrorism, types of international terrorism, and homegrown terrorism (ETA, GRAPO, and Resistencia Galega).

This activity was organized by the Crímina Center for the Study and Prevention of Crime at the Miguel Hernández University (UMH) and by the Training and Professional Development Division (DFP) of the National Police Corps, and is part of the UMH’s 2016 Summer Courses.
